Environmental Concerns Prompt Vietnam to Cancel Two Dams by Kate Ross- Mekong Program Associate of International Rivers

Vietnam has cancelled plans to build two dams on the Dong Nai River that would threaten a world biosphere reserve. A study by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment reported that the Dong Nai 6 and Dong Nai 6A dams would destroy more than 327 hectares of forests, 128 hectares of which are in the Cat Tien National Park. The project’s far-reaching impacts would also affect the Bau Sau (Crocodile Lake) wetlands that are inside the park.

Aunque muchos de ustedes ya conocen la iniciativa SaludArte  impulsada por la Asociación  Instituto Siloé  junto al IUNA, nos gustaría contarles un poco más sobre esta actividad que nos llena de orgullo, sobre todo porque  está llegando a su etapa de inicio. Después de mucho esfuerzo por parte de quienes la hicieron posible y de todos los voluntarios que se han acercado respondiendo a nuestra convocatoria.

El proyecto tuvo inicio en el mes de octubre de 2010.Un grupo de profesores, alumnos y ex alumnos del IUNA (Instituto Universitario Nacional del Arte) se reunieron  los sábados por  la mañana en el acceso de la Av. Brasil del Hospital de Niños Juan P. Garrahan.

Zoos have indeed changed significantly since their origins; important and valuable shifts in zoo policy have occurred. Significantly, by participating in endangered species conservation plans and environmental education programmes, zoos support the conservation of biodiversity. But, there are still discrepancies between zoos’ stated conservation goals and their actual performance. To deliver clear measurable outputs and outcomes in global biodiversity conservation zoos worldwide need to establish an operational model that allows them (jointly) to do this.
