The Sustainable Development Festival

On May 22nd 2017 the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (Alleanza Italiana per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile - ASviS) launched the first Sustainable Development Festival (Festival dello Sviluppo Sostenibile) which ran for 17 days and featured over 200 events throughout the country. It was the first of its kind in Italy.

From May 22nd to June 7th 2018, ASviS relaunches the initiative with a new and renovated edition to spread the culture of sustainable development, foster dialogue and celebrate innovative ideas and solutions, with new formats and contents. The second edition will feature hundreds of events aimed at promoting transformation and engaging civil society, while supporting at the same time the country’s leaders with new proposals to bring Italy on a sustainable development path. More than 180 civil society organizations, several Italian universities and different stakeholders engaged in contributing to the 2030 Agenda, will take part in awareness-raising campaigns and will contribute by launching their own events across the peninsula, North through South.

The events will include panels, conferences, flashmobs, documentary screenings, workshops and other original format events. The initiatives aim at drawing attention to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and promoting awareness about the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda at all levels. Among all of the Festival’s initiatives, three large-scale events will be directly organized by the Alliance’s Secretariat and each day will be characterized by a national event, focused on the different Sustainable Development Goals.

Building upon the success of the first edition, the 2018 Festival will strengthen the network of actors committed to achieving sustainable development at the local level, by consolidating existing collaborations and getting new actors involved in the achievement and coordination of the Festival’s initiatives. Among these, ASviS closely collaborates with: the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research, with whom it launched the second edition of the national contest for schools titled “Let’s score 17 Goals”; the Italian Network of Universities for Sustainable Development (Rus), established by the Conference of Italian University Rectors, to ensure the participation and engagement of experts and university students from all over the country; the National Association of Italian Municipalities, to ensure an extensive involvement of the Italian main cities throughout the Festival’s 17 days.

The Alliance is the largest Italian network dedicated to sustainable development. It was established in February 2016 with the aim of disseminating a culture of sustainability across the Italian society and promoting best practices at government, institutions and business levels.
